Wimbledon Garden Club History

The Wimbledon Garden Club - WGC - was formed in 1980 to encourage friendships among Wimbledon residents, to encourage interest in home gardening and to maintain & improve the beautification of the Wimbledon neighborhood.

We began our 45th year in 2025 & continue to be blessed with 3 original members - Carole Hoyer, Nancy Hurt, & Carole Terry as well as many other long-time members.  All of our members are special & we hope to keep our club growing strong for many more decades.

In 1983, WGC purchased & has maintained the antique styled street signs in Wimbledon & North Wimbledon.  In 2024 the signs were restored to their original glory through membership fees & donations to WGC.

In December 1984, the tradition of decorating mailboxes with red bows & placing garland on street signs in Wimbledon for the holiday season began. In 2024 WGC designed & purchased new garland styled to match the renovated street signs.  Eventually, re-using & storing red ribbon mailbox bows transitioned into fun Bow Making Parties. Members make new bows each year, then hang more than 800 bows on the mailboxes in the neighborhoods we cover.

In 1985, the Wimbledon Garden Club & the Southwest Lions Club contributed to the development of Wimbledon Park. From 1992-1993, numerous trees were planted in the playground vicinity.   The "Past Presidents Grove" of five live oaks were planted in 1994 near the future West garden.  At this time, four yaupon hollies were planted in the park entrance beds. From 1996-1999, WGC members designed & installed the West Garden at the park with support from the Arlington Parks & Recreation Department.  Trees, shrubs, flowers & benches at Wimbledon Park have become tributes to loved ones & special friends.

From 1993-1995, as the extension of Bardin Road was underway, Wimbledon Garden Club designed & installed the beds & irrigation system for the median at the Racquet Club intersection. Club members have maintained the medians for the ensuing years. Occasional updates took place & in Spring 2025 Bardin Median Committee members removed overgrown plants & installed new plants for improved line of site for drivers & appearance.  This was done through membership fees & donations from WGC members & supporters.

In the fall of 2008, 12 new trees were planted at Wimbledon Park as part of the City of Arlington's L.E.A.F project. WGC agreed to water, & nurture these trees for two years.  A new WGC logo was also introduced to meet technological needs.

The Wimbledon Garden Club Tradition represents untold hours of planting flowers, pulling weeds, spreading mulch, & performing the vital responsibilities for maintaining the West Garden & Bardin Road Median.  Additionally, many hours have been spent tying & hanging bows, communicating & planning for activities, recruiting board members & inviting ladies to get more involved in our neighborhoods by attending WGC meetings, where friends get together with food, conversation & a little information from around our area.

preparing dishes for meetings and friends.

A review of the original purpose confirms how united goals & teamwork has fostered friendships, provided horticultural knowledge, encouraged gardening, and beautified the neighborhood.
